Flash Flood Horror in Nairobi: 28Dead, 8 Swept Away and 2 Electrocuted

Heavy rains triggered dangerous flash floods across the city, leaving residents stranded and raising concerns about urban flooding.

  1. Heavy rains brought large parts of Nairobi to a standstill after sudden flash floods swept through several neighborhoods, leaving at least 28people dead in what authorities are calling one of the most dangerous weather incidents in recent weeks.

According to early reports, eight people were swept away by powerful floodwaters as rivers and drainage systems overflowed following hours of intense rainfall. Two additional victims reportedly died from electrocution after coming into contact with exposed electrical connections in flooded areas.

The floods hit quickly, catching many residents and commuters off guard. Roads across the city were submerged, vehicles stalled in rising water, and pedestrians struggled to move through streets turned into temporary rivers.

Several of the most affected areas included Mukuru, Kibra, Mathare, Huruma, South B and C, Pipeline and Roysambu.low-lying neighbourhoods and places with poor drainage systems, where water accumulated rapidly and created dangerous currents.

Witnesses described scenes of panic as people attempted to escape the fast-moving water. Some residents climbed onto higher ground or nearby structures to avoid being swept away while emergency responders worked to reach those trapped by the floods.

The tragedy has once again raised questions about Nairobi’s infrastructure and preparedness for extreme weather events. Urban flooding has become a recurring problem during heavy rains, with blocked drainage systems, rapid urban development, and environmental changes contributing to the severity of the situation.

For many Nairobi residents, the incident highlights the growing risks that come with sudden weather changes in an already congested city.

Authorities have urged residents to remain cautious during periods of heavy rain, avoid crossing flooded roads or rivers, and report dangerous electrical hazards immediately.

As cleanup efforts continue and families mourn the lives lost, the floods serve as a stark reminder of how quickly natural events can turn into deadly disasters in the city.
